State Income Tax Returns: Required by most States
![]() |
Time to get started on this topic. Take a few moments to read every aspect of this paper hopefully it will be of great help.
Along with filing your federal taxes you are also responsible for the filing of your State Income Tax Return as well. All states excluding: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming require that you pay state taxes. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest incomes.
Who must file? Any individual must file a return if either their gross income or their adjusted gross income (AGI) was more than the amount defined by law. California residents must regard their total general gross income to determine their filing requirement.
In the state of California, the Franchise Tax Board determines state taxes by indexing the personal income tax amounts of California Residents. When indexing, they do take into account the rate of inflation and adjust tax brackets, the standard deduction, filing requirement thresholds, and definite credits to guarantee that Californians do not pay extra taxes from year to year due entirely to inflation.
The amount of income reached where a tax liability is incurred is called a tax threshold. There are minimal filing requirement thresholds that are designed to guarantee that most people who do not owe taxes are not required to file a return. Additional dependent exemption and senior credit exemptions are included in the adjustments table made by the Franchise Tax Board.
If you have any income taxable by California (which includes income from all sources while a resident of California and source income while a nonresident), and your income from all sources is more than the filing requirement amounts for residents, must file a return as a Part-Time resident.
If you have a California source income and your income from all your sources is more than the filing requirement amounts for residents you must file a return as a Nonresident of California.
California's Franchise Tax Board is responsible for administering two major tax programs: Personal Income Tax and the Corporation Tax. The FTB is responsible for administering the Homeowner and Renter Assistance (HRA) program, and other delinquent debt collection functions, and non-tax programs, including child support debt collections and delinquent vehicle registration debt collections on behalf of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The California Legislature, in 1999, gave FTB the additional responsibility for securing, developing, and carrying out the statewide child support automation development project.
If you’re not sure whether or not you have to file State Income Tax Returns, it’s always safe to check with the Internal Revenue Service for proper filing instructions.
